with Best Selling Author Jack Canfield
Jack Canfield is the originator and co-creator of the phenomenally successful
Chicken Soup for the Soul series, with more than 75 titles in print and over
80 million copies sold in 39 languages. Today, Jack is a world-renowned expert
at warming hearts and changing lives. His new book, The Success Principles: How
to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be describes the proven
self-empowerment tools and time-tested performance strategies that form the
basis for personal and professional success. Jack’s distinguished clients
worldwide include Virgin Records, Sony Pictures, Merrill Lynch, Cingular
Wireless, General Electric, the Children’s Miracle Network, and hundreds of
others. He has appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, Fox and Friends, and CNN, and
his syndicated column appears in 150 newspapers worldwide. Sharing Ideas is
proud to present this in-depth interview of Jack Canfield, one of the most
inspiring and deserving of individuals we have had the pleasure to know.
Q: Jack, you have been teaching seminars which incorporate success principles
for years. Why did you decide that now is the perfect time to put that system
into a brand new book, The Success Principles?
A: In 1968 I was lucky enough to meet W. Clement Stone, who was worth $600
million at the time and had co-authored a book with Napoleon Hill. He took me
under his wing and taught me his principles and strategies for success. I agreed
that I would pass on to others what he taught me. After several years with Stone
I struck out on my own but became obsessed with understanding even more of the
dynamics of success. I have read over 3000 books on the subject, listened to
hundreds of audio programs and taken about every seminar that is out there.
Having taught these principles in corporations and my weekend workshops, I felt
it was time to get the word out to the larger general public.
Q: Can you tell us about the initial reader response to The Success
Principles?
A: It has been fantastic. The book made every major bestseller list – The New
York Times, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, USA Today, etc. It has sold over
200,000 copies, and it has sold translation rights to 12 languages. I get
hundreds of e-mails every week raving about the book—calling it the new success
classic, a success Bible, and the best book ever written on success." Companies
are conducting Success Principles study groups, and churches are using the book
as the basis for their effective living courses. Just today I had lunch with a
35-year-old man in the meeting planning industry, who told me that he was about
to throw in the towel and quit, but after reading the book and applying the
principles, he was able to book $2.5 million dollars in new business in just two
months!
Q: Jack, given the high level of success you’ve already attained, how do you
maintain your drive for constant and never-ending improvement?
A: I just love to learn and get better. It’s in my nature. I think it is in
all of our natures. Kids want to learn to walk, talk, throw a ball, drive a
car, and so on. It gets killed off in some of us by our parents, school and
other childhood woundings. That’s why I have engaged in years of therapy,
personal growth groups and meditation—to remove the blocks to my natural genius
and drive to learn and contribute. It’s as much about removing the blocks as it
is about putting in something new. That’s why my summer training that I do every

for more info) is so powerful and effective. We remove a lot of blocks. I had
one participant last year who identified a limiting belief that was running him,
released it and went home and got a contract for $750,000 for a year’s worth of
sales training with a multinational company. (His highest previous year’s income
was $150,000.)
Q: You and Mark Victor Hansen have been partners on Chicken Soup for 12
years. You guys were rejected 130 times before you found a publisher! Did you
ever just want to give up? How did you handle the rejection?
A: It was more like 144 times! Imagine having 144 girls turn down your
invitation to take them to the senior prom. That’s a lot of rejections. But no,
we never felt discouraged, just motivated to find another way to present the
book and other people to present it to. After being rejected by all the
publishers in New York, our agent gave us the book back and said it couldn’t be
sold. Not to be stopped, Mark and I got over 20,000 people to sign a pledge to
buy a copy of the book when it was published. Armed with these and a sample of
the stories, we went to the American Bookseller’s Association convention in
Anaheim, California and walked the floor for two days, talking with hundreds of
publishers, who also turned us down. Late on the second day, a little publisher
in Florida, Health Communications Inc., said, "Let us take it home and read it."
Two weeks later they contacted us and agreed to publish the book. That book that
took a year to find a publisher went on to sell over 8 million copies in 41
languages.
So Mark and I teach, "When the world says, ‘No!’ you say ‘Next!’" I believe
there really is no such thing as rejection. If I ask you for something and
you say, "No," I didn’t have it before I asked you, and I don’t have it after I
asked you. My life didn’t get worse; it stayed the same! So there is no
reason to fear rejection. It is just a numbers game. Get out there and play it.
Ask, Ask, Ask, until you get it!
Q: Jack, you’re at the top of your game, yet you still have coaches. Why?
A: Because I keep learning and benefiting from them. There are always coaches
who can help me go to the next level. Coaches keep me focused on my highest
priorities. They teach me techniques for accelerating my rate of success. My
coaches are not trapped by the same limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging
behaviors that I have. My coaches hold me accountable to my deadlines. These are
all really valuable things that I believe we all need.
I have had coaches that have helped me double my income and double my time off
in less than one year. Because of that I can now help others do the same. One of
my current coaches is helping me master internet marketing—which is, as you
know, one of the largest areas of growth for all of us speakers, trainers and
authors.
